Listening to audiobooks is a convenient way to consume books while you’re on the move. There are several benefits to this format: it relieves stress on the eyes, permits multitasking, and is useful for those with visual disabilities.
Some people may not be interested in audiobooks for various reasons. From the narrator’s voice to the cost, here are a few explanations why audiobooks might not be a suitable choice.
It is Essential to Pay Attention to the Narrator’s Rate of Speech
Engaging with audiobooks can be seen as reading, even if someone else is narrating the story to you. You are still consuming the material, although in an auditory format.
It’s convenient to listen to someone reading a book when you have multiple tasks to do or don’t want to be occupied, however, it has one drawback: you’re limited to the speed of the narrator.
If you find that the speed of the narrator is not to your liking, you can always adjust the playback speed. However, this can become quite tedious if you wish to listen to certain sections of the audio more quickly or slowly.
It is Possible That the Narrator’s Voice May Not Be Attractive to You
If you choose to enjoy an audiobook, you must come to terms with having someone else’s voice as your companion while you listen.
If the narrator has the aptitude and talent to make the characters come alive with their vocalization, you can anticipate an enjoyable listening experience. However, if you are not fond of the narrator’s voice, the whole thing can become tiresome.
It can be quite disappointing when you don’t like the narrator of an audiobook. You have two choices: either stick with the narrator you don’t like or search for a different version of the audiobook. If you’re not keen on the audio experience, you can always opt to read an e-book edition.
Listening Should Not Involve Frequent Jumps Back and Forth
A picture of a man looking at a tablet is depicted in the photograph. The individual is intently gazing at the device in their hands, with the image highlighting the modern technology that has become such a large part of our lives.
When you are listening to audiobooks, you can jump ahead or back a designated number of seconds. This is helpful for those times when you need to go back a few minutes for something you missed, or if you want to skip ahead a few seconds or more. However, there are no other options.
It is not possible to easily reach certain points in an audiobook as there is no structured way of breaking it up into chapters or sections. If you were to try, it could be quite a laborious task due to the need to keep stopping and checking that the desired moment has not been missed.
To be able to go to a specific part of an audiobook, one must be aware of its timestamp. This is difficult since it is not feasible to predict when you need to jump ahead.
Audiobooks Don’t Possess the Ability to be Bookmarked
A book sitting on a white backdrop with a blue band cutting through the centre is pictured in the image.
Regrettably, not many audiobooks have a bookmarking capability. Therefore, they cannot be utilized to pinpoint precise points in the audiobook. This renders them unsuitable if you wish to quickly jump back to parts of the audiobook.
Rather than relying on bookmarks, one could jot down the time stamps of any points in an audiobook they’d like to revisit. It may be a bit of a bother, but it’s preferable to not having any record at all.
Audiobooks Lack Visual Stimulation
The audiobook experience lacks visuals such as images, maps, charts, and graphs which can help listeners to better grasp elements of stories. This might be an issue for some people who are considering this form of media.
If you are accustomed to stories that contain certain elements, such as visuals or interactions, it might be difficult to find an affinity with audiobooks as they only offer the sound of a narrator’s voice.
Audio Books Can Be Costly
The cost of audiobooks is higher than that of e-books and physical books due to the labour involved in recording them, the need to cover the narrator and production team’s wages and the expenses associated with distribution.
A book’s size can affect the price of its audiobook version. Additionally, a lack of demand for audiobooks often leads to them being more expensive to make up for.
You don’t need to pay a subscription to locate free audiobooks. You can find them on sites that provide them at no charge. Although the latest popular bestsellers may not be available, there are numerous classic titles to pick from.
Technical Difficulties May Compromise the User Experience
Certain problems could hinder your ability to listen to an audiobook. An example would be if your device doesn’t work with the platform or format of the audiobook or is malfunctioning.
When it comes to streaming audiobooks online, one could face issues with an unsteady internet connection, leading to buffering or breaks in the audio. Also, the player or app you are using might have technical issues which can result in skipping, unanticipated stopping, or playback difficulties.
Audio quality could be an issue with an audiobook; it could contain static or distortion, making it hard to comprehend the material. Additionally, if your device has limited storage, you may be unable to download the book. Alternately, physical books and e-books do not have this same limitation. But, there are methods to increase the storage on your phone.
Audiobooks Do Not Provide a Sense of Touch
.
When it comes to reading books, the tactile experience of feeling the book’s weight in your hands and the pleasure of flipping the pages is something that audiobooks can’t match. Thus, there is an advantage that physical books have over audiobooks in this regard.
Not Everyone Finds Audiobooks Appealing
Audiobooks can be an enjoyable way to experience books, but they may not be suitable for everyone. If you favour reading words on a page and like to go at your speed, then this method of reading might not be the best choice.
One’s opinion of audiobooks is not something to be judged. Ultimately, your satisfaction lies in what you find most suitable.

Hey a great post you have here!
I was wondering myself about the same question. It certainly doesn’t feel like audio books would provide the same benefits as reading would actually. I mean it is good for listening and relaxing to, also helps to build your imagination and you can multi task whilst listening but reading yourself provides benefits of its own which can be obtained from just listening.
You have some great points here!
Thanks again and have a great day!

Hey Sariya,
Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad you enjoyed the post. You raise an interesting question about the benefits of reading versus listening to audiobooks. While both reading and listening to audiobooks have their advantages, it’s difficult to say which one is better as it depends on the individual’s preference and situation.
According to a source, both reading and listening to audiobooks can be effective in terms of learning and comprehension. Some people absorb more when they read or see information, while others learn better if they listen to someone explain a concept or narrate a story. For some, reading words on a page might help them to focus better and absorb the scenes in their way (like imagining the unique voices of each character). But with audiobooks, if the author contributes to the narration, you’ll likely get the experience they intended readers to have since they’ll be in control of the cadence and tone with which the book is read.
On the other hand, reading often provides a more personal experience, as your mind will be in charge of assigning voices to the characters and creating all the mannerisms and subtleties that come with a unique human voice. Listening to audiobooks, on the other hand, can create a more social experience, yet still intimate, as you’ll hear a human voice talking directly into your ear as if they were speaking to you and no one else.
In conclusion, both reading and listening to audiobooks have their unique benefits. It’s up to you to decide which one works best for you based on your preference and situation. I hope this helps!

Hello, great article about why audiobooks may not be the best way to read books. Personally, I prefer classic books because I love to feel the pages and the tactile experience. I so much love the smell of books, paper, etc… I like reading at my own pace. I love to read while soaking in my bubbly bath when I am all relaxed and quiet. It is really soothing.
All that said, I offer my little brother audio books because he is handicapped and cannot read on his own. He loves listening to them and even memorizes them! They are precious to him.
Audiobooks are also great to listen to when I drive, especially when I travel.
Hey!
Exactly! Audiobooks are not for everyone, but they can help people with disabilities, or even listen while driving/walking/doing chores etc.
Glad you use them. Thanks for stopping by!

I am definitely agree with you and nothing to add about your points of view. Audiobooks can relieve stress and upgrade yourself without to much concentration to spend on and all the rest are benefits you mantion. Nice to hear from you and I look forward to hear from you
All the best!

Hey, idem,

I like to read a lot but never was drawn to audiobooks. I enjoy hard copy the most and occasionally I’ll read a book on Kindle. To me, audiobooks are boring for whatever reason, but I agree with you that they do lack visual stimulation. The cost is not a factor for me but any technical challenges would be frustrating. I also enjoy the sense of touch of turning a page of a book. I feel like I accomplished something.
Hey Joseph,
Not everyone enjoys audiobooks, but they can be convenient while driving or walking or for people with disabilities.
